I can't remember exactly what week and day I'm on with SFL. Oh well, suffice it to say that this is longer than any healthy eating plan has ever lasted before. While I'm probably slacking a bit in some areas, I do feel there are some changes that are becoming permanent. For example, this morning when I dropped Peter off at the airport I was starving. Instead of purchasing a chocolate bar (which would have always been my first choice), I bought a small bag of nuts. They were roasted and salted, which isn't exactly what I'm supposed to eat, but probably the best option at the airport.
Then, tonight I decided I would have a few Doritos (I should have been having greek yogurt and berries ...), so I counted out a serving of them. That has always been huge for me. If I can stick to portion sizes I can be successful at this. I only ate 60% of the serving, which is even better.
After seeing 127.4 on the scale on Friday, my weight has crept back up slightly, but that's to be expected. I've had a couple of big weight-loss weeks, so I'm anticipating that I won't lose anything this week. I am feeling fairly motivated to stay on track with my eating.
What I'm not feeling motivated to do? Exercise! Friday was my scheduled rest day, then I took last night off because it was Peter's only night home, and then tonight I was just too exhausted. I really want to get back into a routine, but I may end up missing more days before this teaching block is over. I can't wait to finish month 2 of Insanity so I can go back to shorter workouts!
I had a wonderful time shopping all by myself today! I did some Christmas shopping on top of regular errands. I could easily blow the budget buying for the kids for Christmas but I tried to keep things reasonable! I haven't entered everything into YNAB yet - I just put it on my to do list for tomorrow night.
Overall, I'm feeling pretty good for tonight. Two more crazy weeks and then things start to slow down a tiny bit. It was so nice having Peter home and realizing what it's like to be all together as a family.
This blog really does have 9 lives! I restarted posting to track my current weight-loss journey with Simply For Life, but am hoping to branch out and keep a record of our family's life. I feel like time passes too quickly!

Another weekend!
But a very special one planned. Peter will be home for a day after four weeks away! Too bad it's not longer, but we'll take what we can get.
I totally skipped my "official" weigh-in report this week, but I am over the moon excited to report that I finally broke through an invisible weight wall I've been running up against for over 10 years this morning. I finally saw 127.4 lbs on the scale.
Left to go: 7.4 lbs!! That seems so much less than 21 lbs when I started. I can definitely feel a difference in my clothes now. The seams on my lululemon pants are thanking me, I'm sure.
I must say I'm not enjoying month 2 of Insanity as much as month 1. I think it's because of the length of the workouts - an hour is too long for me most days. I'm going to finish (3 weeks left) but I doubt I'll do many max DVDs again. I will probably do some from the first month - they're pretty fun.
And, one more thing to be excited about - I hit the halfway point of my internship today. In one way it's a bit depressing, because it already feels like it's been forever, but in another way it's exciting because now we're counting down. What I'm really counting down to right now is the end of teaching two classes and Peter coming home. After I'm down to prepping one class and my husband is back home I imagine things will be slightly less crazy.
Since I've been slacking on posting lately, here are a few pictures of some meals I've had in the past couple of weeks.
This was a huge weekend lunch! It was absolutely delicious, but so much food. You'll see I couldn't get enough chicken on the pizza so I had to add some to my salad. On the weekends I eat my grain at lunch, which during the week I have it at breakfast (just a matter of convenience).
Homemade chicken fingers, 1/2 cup sweet potato fries (recipe here and they are delicious!), and 1 1/2 cups bean sprout stir-fry. I've decided I like my bean sprouts raw ... This is a supper.
This was a pretty boring supper. Roasted salmon with a dill sauce, and sauteed sugar snap peas and baby carrots. I like to split up my 2 cups of veggies if they're cooked. It's a lot of one type of vegetable to eat.
And that's some of what I've been eating. It's interesting - I had my consult yesterday and Cory asked me if I was still weighing my meat. I said I was and then he mentioned that was good because most people start eating less protein once they stop weighing it! I figured it was to keep me from increasing my portion size ;)
Well, since Peter's home tomorrow I'd like to prep as much as possible for next week tonight. I guess I should get at it!

And ... breathe ...
I feel like I hardly have time to breathe these days. Seriously ... Life is that insane. I'm learning more and more what it means to rely on God for strength each and every day.
In good news ....
In good news ....
- As of Friday my internship will be half over!!
- Today I saw 128.0 lbs on the scale. I cannot wait to see 127.x there - something I haven't seen in the past 11 years!
- My university supervisor had her second visit today and everything went well.
- Peter comes home for the weekend in two days, and we have awesome friends helping who are going to make this visit great (and allow me to get some shopping done in the city sans kiddos)
- Two weeks from tomorrow I will drop one class and then another week (approximately) until I get to drop down to teaching two classes (same material).
- I'm skipping my second workout in a row tonight. I don't want to, but this week has been so crazy. I did still get three workouts in so far this week.
- I feel like I've just been surviving this week. I really want to spend more time with the kids. Have I mentioned I can't wait until this internship is over?
- I've been guzzling Diet Coke again. Drank my last can tonight so that's it for a while. I feel better when I'm not drinking it - much more powerful and in control - but it tastes so good! *sigh*

Full-time Insanity!
I'm not off-track - just super busy these days! I'm on my way to bed, but just wanted to poke my head in and say I'm still alive ...
I took Hannah & Nathan to see a Toopy & Binoo show on Thursday night (pictures to follow). We all had a great time, but it's made for a very busy few days getting prepared in advance and then catching up.
Still plugging along at healthy eating and exercising. Hoping to see the lowest weight since my wedding this week. *fingers crossed*

Insanity Fit Test #3
Tonight was my first night back after hurting my hip last week. And, of course, I was due to take a fit test. I was very concerned, as I was pretty shaky before I started, which is usually how I get when my blood sugar is low. Anyway, all I can say about the results is 'wow!' I'm not sure if the better results are due to increased fitness or just because I had a few days of rest between my last workout and the test, but I am very impressed with the progress in a month!
Hey - maybe it's the lack of Diet Coke in my system? ;) I felt like I was going to puke after each exercise, but I think having my previous numbers in front of me pushed me to work harder. I thought my last low-plank oblique number was 59, which is why I pushed myself to get above 60.
Tomorrow I start the month two workouts, which are longer and supposedly more intense than month one. I'm kind of scared!

Week 8 Weigh-in & Measurements
I'm kind of bummed I didn't get to take pictures today, but Peter's away so they'll have to wait until Peter gets home in a couple of weeks.
I did, however, weigh-in and take my measurements. As per usual my weight was almost 2 lbs higher than it was last Friday. I'm starting to realize why that is, but I don't really want to admit that I'm cheating more on Sundays because I meet with Cory on Saturdays and start a new meal spreadsheet on Mondays, so he doesn't see my Sundays. Isn't that awful?? By cheating I mean having a few crackers or arrow root cookies, but it could definitely affect things.
So, weigh-in results:
Starting weight: 140.4 lbs
Current weight: 131.6 lbs
Goal weight: 120 lbs
Left to go: 11.6 lbs!
And, here's a chart with my measurements over the past two months:
Not too shabby for two months! I wore a *new* pair of pants today (bought last spring but finally got them hemmed) and they were falling off! I might have to try out my sewing skills, as I'm not buying new dress clothes before my internship is over.
And, the very, very, very most exciting thing on the weight-loss / healthy living front right now?? I haven't had any Diet Coke since Saturday afternoon! That's over 48 hours. I can't remember the last time I went that long without it. I've had a couple cups of green tea, but other than that I've been okay! It's so strange. Of course, not having it in the house has been key. There have been a few instances (especially after school today) where I probably would have had some if it was available.
Other than that, just trucking along. I can't even describe how excited I will be to finish this four month period!

Hodge Podge
I have a bunch of things rolling around in my head tonight so this post will probably be all over the place.
First, I've looked at pinterest a bit this week. Our new babysitter does a craft *every day* with the kids! Yes, it's unbelievable to me. To me, crafts are reserved for special days ;) Colouring will have to suffice the rest of the time. That said, I thought I might want to follow her lead, and she said she gets all her ideas off of pinterest. So, I went over to the site and allowed myself to be sucked in to the vortex ...
We decided to try this pin today, and it was a huge success. (That's good - if it had flopped that would have deflated my enthusiasm to do any more crafts in the near future.) Here's the kids working on their trees.
The kids had a great time and it was fairly simple to clean up. And, I found a new place to hang their artwork. I don't like having it on the fridge (must be my years of following Flylady).
I had my consult this morning and it went well. He was pleased with the weight loss, obviously, and he said as long as I'm feeling any sort of twinge in my hip I shouldn't exercise. I guess that gets me off the hook for tonight! We talked about my sugar cookie binge and discussed ways I could have avoided it.
I've taken a few food pictures lately and I'll post them soon. Suffice it to say today's lunch was *huge*!
Today, due to some reading I've been doing, I made a decision to really think about my answer when the kids ask me something. My go-to answer is 'no' or 'later,' when many times what they're asking could be easily accommodated right now. Of course there has to be a balance, but today went much more smoothly than usual when I kept that in mind.
One other thing in my head is a sentence from 'Made to Crave.' I'm not sure I have it exactly word-for-word, but Lysa writes something to the effect of: "What I eat, I crave." Of course, that makes sense when we thing about it. After I had cookies one night it's all I could think about the next afternoon. However, I haven't really applied that to my drinks. I've been trying to cut back (unsuccessfully) on the Diet Coke. I can easily do just 1 one day, and the next day drink no water and have 3 cans of pop. I think I'm going to use that mantra, changing it slightly to 'What I drink, I crave.' This will mean a hard core quit in the beginning, but I don't imagine I'll have the same withdrawal since the amount I've been consuming has been so variable. I'll mitigate the symptoms with green tea (no worries about craving that ;) ), and make sure to get my water in. To strengthen my resolve, I have no Diet Coke in the house right now. And I am definitely not getting three kids out of bed to go get some. That's just crazy talk ;)
I'm going to chat with a friend tonight. My goal during that conversation - clean out my fridge! It's in desperate need of a cleaning.

I saw it!!
This morning I stepped on the scale and saw it ... 129.8 lbs!! So exciting :) Even though my eating has been only so-so lately I was glad to get the results. Sometimes I think that when I 'cheat' a bit, it keeps my body guessing so that I lose more weight. I'm not sure how scientifically true that is, but it's a nice justification. If I can lose 2 more pounds I'll be lower than I've been since my wedding - 11 years ago. That should give me some motivation to keep up with the plan!
I am so very tired tonight. It's just after 9 and I can't keep my eyes open! I'm going to try finishing prep for one more thing next week and then I'll be done for the night. I do feel like I'm coming down with a cold, which isn't surprising. The girls have both been dealing with one for about a week. Nathan, somehow, has been fine.
My hip feels better today, but not 100% yet. I figured I would take tonight off and then get back at it tomorrow night. I seem to have lost my steam on exercising this week, but I think it's a combination of factors that will hopefully clear up within the next week or so. Everything except the extreme busyness of prepping and teaching 4 classes! It's exhausting to try and keep students on-task and learning for 4 hours a day. Ten weeks left in my internship, and only about 5 left of teaching 4 classes a day. It will be great to drop chemistry at that point, and possibly math.
I've been continuing to try and enjoy my kids more. This fall is teaching me that their childhoods are short and they will grow up all too quickly. Having the opportunity to stay home with them is one I don't want to waste! I hope this resolve sticks around in the new year so I can put it to good use!
I have a consult at 8 tomorrow morning - I'm scared of what Cory will say about the cookie fiasco yesterday.
Time for bed :)

Been awhile!
Oh wow - I can't believe I missed two days in a row. That's unusual, and generally when I miss posting it means I'm doing less than stellar on the whole healthy living front. This week is no exception ...
The week has been extremely stressful! My university supervisor was in class on Tuesday, and today I picked up my last class to teach. I'll now be teaching 4 classes a day for 4 - 6 weeks. I'm exhausted just thinking about it!
I also had a slight mishap doing my Insanity disk tonight. I've been finding the Cardio Balance & Recovery DVD to be really, really hard on my hip flexors. Anyway, my right one was sore before I started tonight, and when I was doing one exercise tonight it pretty much popped. It's now very sore when I work. I stopped the DVD at that point and I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I hope this heals quickly!
Oh, and in other downer news - I had cookies last night and this afternoon :( My willpower just failed me - no other excuse. Not looking forward to talking to Cory about that one!
Other than that, I'm glad another week is almost over. I have less than 50 days left to teach ... not that I'm counting or anything ;)

A Weird Thanksgiving Monday
We had a great supper last night with friends. This Thanksgiving I am especially thankful for everyone who has stepped in and helped us just in this first week with Peter away. It's truly amazing and a testament to God's faithfulness! I'm the type of person (aren't most of us?) who hates to ask for help, so it's been humbling on the occasions I've had to do that (thanks, Jenn, for taking the kids this Friday!), but in the majority of cases people have just offered help.
Having had dinner last night, it's been a strange Thanksgiving Monday here. No big dinners (or leftovers - which is a good thing for my plan!), and since we've all already been off for 3 days it feels almost back to 'normal.' By that I mean like when I wasn't on my internship. It makes me even more anxious for Christmas so we can experience this every day - minus the creating and photocopying math quizzes.
What I don't want to experience every day? The disappointment on the scale this morning.
Starting weight: 140.4 lbs
Current weight: 133.8 lbs (yes, this is higher than the last two weeks!)
Goal weight: 120 lbs
Left to go: 13.8 lbs! Ugh ... to say I'm frustrated would be an understatement. I saw 130.8 last week! I have a few ideas about what went wrong the past few days and am obviously determined not to repeat them. I'm hoping since I've seen that lower number that it will return quickly ;) I still have 3 weeks to get under 130 *fingers crossed*
In light of this, what did we do today? Make sugar cookies of course. Why do I torture myself this way?? I managed to get them out of the oven and put away in the cupboard without a taste. I was praying while I did it, though. Lysa Terkeurst's book is making me contemplate the connection between healthy eating and my spiritual walk. The first connection is obviously that one of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control and, prior to this, I didn't have much when it came to what went in my mouth. I'm listening to her book but I'm very tempted to purchase a paper copy soon so I can mark it up. The first time I listened to it I wasn't ready to go at it full-tilt, but I think I'm there now. She admits that her book is about how to get the 'want to' to stick with a healthy lifestyle long term, which is exactly what I need. SFL will give me the 'how.'
And, I've mentioned before, but this blog is really speaking to me since I found it. In the intentional parenting course it mentioned trying to take more pictures of everyday moments. So, I've been really trying to do that. They're just phone pictures (oh, how I wish I had paid to get the iPhone 4S instead of the 4 - I've heard it has a much better camera!), but I've been trying to take more pictures as I think of it. Here are a few of our cookie making adventure! I love that all three are now old enough to take part in stuff like this. Nathan even cracked the egg for the cookie dough. I think sometimes I underestimate what my kids can do.
The kids came to the school with me to do some more photocopying (will it never end??) and I promised them if they were extra good they could have two cookies each. Bribery worked really well in this instance :)

Week 7, Day 7
I am not anticipating a good weigh-in tomorrow. I was up this morning (higher than last week's official weigh-in!) and then had turkey dinner with a small sliver of pumpkin pie for dessert. So ... like I said ... not planning for an encouraging morning.
I have been so tired the past few days so I think I'm going to head to bed even though it's barely past 10:00.
I think I need to start giving myself credit for the things I avoid - there are so many situations where I make the right choice that I want to noticing them. I usually only focus on the times I messed up.
So, today I didn't eat any cinnamon buns or any regular buns when they came out of the oven. Nor did I have a muffin from the batch I made yesterday. And, I only had one can of Diet Coke even though I really wanted a second one tonight!
Off to bed ... I'm very glad tomorrow's a holiday.

Week 7, Day 6
It's been a crazy couple of days! Nathan woke up sick in the night on Thursday night around 3:30. So, of course, my brain starts racing with how I'm going to get things organized for Friday. I couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up and worked through what I needed to prepare to leave for the sub that day. Things were made more complicated by the fact that my cooperating teacher wasn't there that day.
While I'm doing this, I'm feeling guilty because I felt like I was more concerned about work and the inconvenience this whole thing was causing than I was about my son. Ugh - it was awful. When he was sick for the second time I was actually yelling at him to get to the bathroom. The poor kid is only 5 and has only been sick a couple of times in his life. He would just freeze when he felt like he was going to be sick. It's not my most proud Mom moment (have you noticed most of my bad Mom moments are in the middle of the night?? I desperately need my sleep).
Anyway, I ended up staying home with the kids on Friday and got my last workout of month 1 of Insanity finished! I can't believe I'm done the first month. Starting tomorrow I do a recovery week and then start the max workouts. I'm quite nervous but also excited.
I spent most of the day yesterday and today prepping for next week. To achieve my goal of having the week ready by the night before school (Monday night this week) I have to do double duty this weekend. If I can do it, though, I'll have all next week to prepare for the following week. I think it's possible, but it's going to be busy this weekend. Plus, with my university supervisor coming on Tuesday I needed to be really prepared for that lesson.
I also spent some time in the kitchen today. I made a pumpkin pie for supper tomorrow night (we're going to a friend's house), banana-chocolate chip muffins, chicken breasts for the week, and overnight buns (which will go in the oven tomorrow morning).
I am so hungry tonight! Yesterday I had a touch of the flu as well and ended up eating crackers all day. I tried to eat my regular lunch but couldn't do it. I didn't gain any weight from the day of bad eating, but I have been really hungry all day. I've eaten well today, although I drank too much Diet Coke ... again. *sigh*
Tonight I restarted listening to Lysa Terkeurst's 'Made to Crave'. I got a lot out of it when I listened to it several months ago, and I think I'll learn even more now that I'm on my own road to dealing with my food issues.
One thing that I remember her saying is that 'If it's not on my plan, it doesn't go in my mouth.' I need to get back to that resolve.
Well, I still have more prep to do tonight so I should get on it ...
One week sans Peter in the books! I'm also 1/3 of the way through my internship :)

Week 7, Day 4
I had a SFL consult this afternoon. I got to share my latest results on the scale (130.8 - yay!) and Cory went through the process of setting a SMART goal for weight loss. As a teacher, SMART goals are what we do, so this was familiar territory. Here's my goal:
Specific - A weight of 120 lbs
Measurable - using the scale, measurements, pictures, and the way my clothes fit (although obviously the scale is the ultimate measure based on the goal!)
Actions - journal, exercise, and good nutrition - check!
Realistic - it's definitely an achievable weight for my frame, and the time frame (see next point) is also realistic - I hope!
Timed - he suggested we shoot for 24 weeks from when I started, which would be February 3, 2013. Truthfully I hope I can do it by January 1st - that would be awesome :) No weight loss New Year's resolution for me this year. I'm going to work extra hard to reach that time frame.
I did my second-last workout in month one of Insanity tonight. I can't believe I'm at this point! I'm a little nervous because the workouts next week are less intense. I hope it doesn't kill my weight loss for the week. After that they get even more intense than this past month, though, so that should more than make up for it.
Thursdays seem to be the day it hits me that another week has passed. It's insane how quickly the time is passing. This is good for several reasons this fall - I really can't wait to be finished my internship. I am starting to really, really enjoy the time in the classroom, but I'm also becoming firmly convinced that this is not the season for me to be working. I also can't wait for Peter to be home.
Ooo ... in something out of the ordinary, a friend has set up a ladies hot tub party in her back yard for next Wednesday. I got a babysitter set up today, so I'm super excited! Should be a nice break from responsibilities for an evening :)
Well, time to get moving ... laundry and then more prep!

Happy Birthday, Abigail!
Happy birthday, Abigail! I can't believe my 'baby' is two years old. She has the heartiest laugh and sometimes gets a growl in her voice and amuses herself (and us) with that. She also is probably the most stubborn of all my kids. I find when she gets in one of her moods, the only thing that works is to put her in her crib for a few minutes. After several minutes of screaming she'll calm down and start to play quietly. The coolest part is that when I go to get her, her mood has entirely changed. I'm interested to see how this will play out as she grows up. We celebrated her birthday last week before Peter left and while his dad was visiting. However, I couldn't let her birthday pass without some sort of cake, so I bought some of the two-bite cupcakes from co-op today. The kids had one each for dessert after supper. Now I need to get rid of the other 9 before I dig into them! I think I'm dropping them off at the babysitter's in the morning :)
As far as the rest of life goes:
Let me just say that prepping for science classes takes about 10 times longer than prepping for math! Tonight I spent 2 hours prepping, but I did manage to get the test made up for Friday and I think I'm good with my science class until then. Hopefully now I can start prepping my next unit - gotta be ready for Tuesday!! Have I mentioned how glad I'll be when I finish my internship?
I'm starting to get stressed that I won't be able to keep up with prepping for three courses at a time over the next 6 weeks. Not much I can do about that now, though - just try and get ahead if at all possible. I'm going to have to make better use of my weekends. Lately I haven't done any prepping at all on the weekends, which isn't going to work. A nice goal would be to be ready for each week by the end of the weekend before.
I had another good eating day and got my workout in tonight. I'm now unwinding for the last half hour before bed by watching the latest episode of Hawaii 5-0 :)
One thing Cory mentioned at my last consult was that I should try and be as strict as possible with myself while I'm in the weight-loss phase, and then once I get to maintenance I can play around with what I can eat without putting weight back on. That seems fair, so I'm trying to stick closely to the meal plan this week. I'm starving tonight but it's close enough to bedtime that it doesn't make sense to eat now.

It figures ...
I stepped on the scale this morning and it said 132.2! lol. Mondays just seem to be a day where I retain water or something. I'm thinking I might just post my new lows as I reach them. That's how I usually record when I'm trying to lose weight.

Week 7, Day 1 & September Workout Summary
For some reason the crummy weigh-in this morning didn't seem to get me down. I think
I really am starting to see this as more of a long term thing. In
fact, dare I use the 'p' word to describe my choices today? So far
everything has been on-plan and eaten on time (that seems to be a big
part of SFL - eating the right things at the right times).
I'm scared to mention this since I'm still having an internal debate over it, but I haven't had any Diet Coke yet today, which, after my 4 cans (yikes!) yesterday, is quite an accomplishment. I'm feeling pretty good, and since it's already after 9:30 pm I'm going to try really hard to hold out and make it a day without any. I'm not sure if I got past the 24 hour mark back at the beginning of the program - I'll have to check! Right now it's definitely a craving based on routine and habit ... something I have to conquer if I'm going to get rid of the addiction.
I managed to power through Insanity's Plyometric Cardio Circuit routine tonight (with the help of some chili at supper and Super Pump Max). Hard to believe I only have to do it once more as part of my first round of the program! It's definitely become one of my favourite workouts. Tonight I managed to do 43 push-ups (in sets of 3 or 4 at a time) throughout the workout. For a girl who couldn't even manage 2 last year, I consider that quite an accomplishment!
And, here's my workout calendar for the month of September :) I'm so pleased with the consistency! I managed to work out 24 days out of 30.
Can't wait to move on to month 2 of Insanity!

Week Six Weigh-In
It was bound to happen sometime! The scale didn't move at all this week :( It was probably due in part to the crazy last few days - my choices have not been ideal. Another reason for it is probably that I had big losses (for me) the past two weeks.
Starting weight: 140.4 lbs
Current weight: 133.6 lbs
Goal weight: 120 lbs
Left to go: 13.6 lbs! (Hopefully this will be less next week! My interim goal is to be under 130 by the time Peter comes home for a visit in 4 weeks ...)
