I've seen newborn summaries week by week on a few other blogs and thought it was a great idea! Things change so quickly when they're young that having this to look back on will be very useful :)
Hannah turned two months old this week - hard to believe! This was a good week overall for her. I remember with Nathan weeks 6 through 10 were his most difficult. For Hannah I would have to say her first month was much harder than her second.
Eating and Sleeping
I have followed Babywise with her pretty much since birth since it worked well for Nathan (and is what my Mom calls 'common sense'! lol). The basics are just that I've spent the last two months making sure Hannah's day has a sense of routine where she eats approximately every 2 1/2 - 3 hours, stays up for a few minutes to play, and then has a nap until her next feeding time.
This week I moved her to a full 3-hour routine. She eats at 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm, and 10 pm. She generally still wakes up once during the night, usually between 3 and 4 am. Since she's still young I'm ok with that feeding remaining in place for a few more weeks if she needs it. She did actually sleep through the night twice this week, but once her 10 pm feeding was pushed until midnight as I fell asleep on the couch. I'll have another post soon with details of my schedule with the two kids - it's trickier than I thought it would be trying to get their schedules meshed.
Hannah is a great eater, and very fast - she generally only takes about 15 minutes total to eat (probably 10 minutes on the first side, 5 on the second). With Nathan I made sure he spent a full 30 minutes eating every nursing period, but I learned from my sister who took a breastfeeding class that that's not necessary for every baby. It's made me much less stressed about feeding her. At her two-month appointment she had gained lots and is growing, so we're going to stick with what's working!
Waketime
Hannah could handle between 45 and 60 minutes of waketime total this week. 45 minutes was usually for the first 2 cycles and 60 minutes for the rest of the day. With our new schedule I've been making sure I get at least two one-on-one waketimes just with her to do tummy time and read, etc ... This is in addition to her daily bath. It's been fun to see her really start to enjoy her activity mat this week. She's also laughed a few times and started to coo - too much fun! This was the first week she really seemed to focus when I read her a book, too. Overall, a very interactive week for her.
Eyes
Hannah has been dealing with some eye discharge pretty much since birth. I tried antibiotic drops on the advice of the 24-hour hotline and just stopped them today, so we'll see what happens next. The doctor said if they didn't clear it up that it was just due to blocked tear ducts.
Swaddling
We still swaddle Hannah for pretty much every nap and at night. I've tried leaving her completely unswaddled for a few naps as well as leaving one arm out of the swaddle at other times. It's hit or miss whether she'll sleep well unswaddled for naps, but she can't even handle one arm out at night so we'll keep swaddling for now. She's so good about going to sleep on her own and staying asleep that I don't want to mess with it.
Milestones
As I mentioned above, Hannah started cooing and laughing this week. She's been smiling since about 6 weeks old and we enjoy every one of them. She can follow toys with her eyes when she's alert and she's starting to reach out to bat at her toys on her activity mat. It's so fun to watch her concentrate. This week we worked on getting more tummy time in and she started to stay there for about 7 minutes before she screamed. She's always been quite strong and can hold her head and upper torso fairly steady.
Things for next week
I'd like to keep track of things I want to try / work on with her. This week I'd really like to work on more tummy time and possible start working on rolling over tummy to back. I am enjoying the two one-on-one waketimes per day and want to continue that as much as possible. I also want to keep her eating times as consistent as possible so that hopefully she'll sleep longer stretches at night.
I think that's our week in a nutshell. Our routine has been messed up a few days because of house showings, but we don't complain about those. Still praying that the house sells before Peter has to leave at the end of the month! We had people through tonight that want some more details on the house, so I think that's a good sign.
